PHILOSOPHY & STUDY OF ESOTERICISM WORKSHOP DAY 2 https://vimeo.com/979949348?share=copy This video (including music) was recorded and produced by Stephanie Shea of Rejected Religion in collaboration with the HHP Centre (History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents) at the University of Amsterdam. Esotericism was for a long time a topic that very few people in the academy saw worth exploring. This has changed since the early 1990´s when the study of esotericism started to flourish as a new multidisciplinary field within the academic world. Since then, the field has grown into many directions and it covers a wide array of different topics and perspectives. However, there is not much discussion about esotericism within the philosophical tradition especially after the 19th century, and there are not many scholars with a background in philosophy. Even more so, apart from few exceptions such as Glenn Alexander Magee and Sean McGrath, philosophers have not reacted in any way to the emerging field of the study of esotericism. The aim of the workshop is to bring together philosophers and scholars of esotericism to discuss the intersection of these disciplines mainly through examples of esoteric thought within academic philosophy. Having usually their background in the humanities, scholars of esotericism tend to sidestep philosophical truth-questions related to esotericism. When the field gains more and more popularity especially outside the academia, philosophical assessments might yet prove a valuable addition to the field. On the other hand, philosophers would get new insights about the history (and also the present) of their field by taking the often sidestepped esoteric influences in philosophy seriously into account. In addressing questions related to esotericism philosophers could also learn a lot from the methodological development that has taken place in the study of esotericism during its 30 years of existence.
